Information about the ecology, biology, physiology, behavior and population dynamics of sea lions is needed to resolve why sea lions have declined.  Consortium Scientists have conducted a number of studies to fill in the missing pieces needed to fully understand:

  • General and Diving Physiology―How do sea lions catch their prey and survive in the ocean?
  • Population Dynamics―How has the Steller sea lion population changed in time and space?
  • Ecology―How do sea lions and other marine mammals fit into the ocean’s food web?
  • Biology―What are normal behaviors, diets, survival rates and reproductive rates of sea lions and do they differ between increasing and decreasing populations?
