THE
NORTH PACIFIC UNIVERSITIES MARINE MAMMAL RESEARCH CONSORTIUM
MMRU
administers the Consortium, which unites the marine mammal research
of four Universities: the Universities of Alaska, British Columbia,
Washington, and Oregon State. It combines the skills and expertise of
university-based physiologists, ecologists, marine mammalogists, oceanographers,
and fisheries specialists.
The
mission of the Consortium is to undertake long-term studies of marine
mammals in the North Pacific Ocean. Much of the initial research is focused
on the decline of Steller sea lions, but also includes studies of other
species such as killer whales, harbour seals, sea otters, and northern
fur seals. Graduate student participation and training is central to the
success of the program.
