The primary objective of my M.Sc. research was to describe harbour
porpoise (Phocoena phocoena) spatial distribution and habitat use
as related to abundance and bathymetry in the waters of southern Vancouver
Island. Data were collected through Distance-based line transect surveys
over a one year period, for a total of 993 nautical miles. The secondary
objective was to increase the current knowledge of harbour porpoise prey
resources through examination of hard prey remains in the stomachs of
post-mortem stranded animals.
Additionally in 2001, Graeme Ellis (Pacific Biological Station, Fisheries
and Oceans Canada), Andrew W. Trites (director, MMRU) and myself, investigated
the levels of incidental catch of harbour porpoise in the southern British
Columbia commercial selective salmon fishery. For a PDF file of this report
